The Rough Guide to Travel with Babies and Young Children (Rough Guides Reference Titles)

The Rough Guide to Travel with Babies and Young Children (Rough Guides Reference Titles)
Customer Review: At last, practical, sensible advice
I must admit that I was sceptical when a friend recommended this book to me. I have often travelled with my three young children and I thought I knew it all. However I now admit I was wrong. This Rough Guide is full of useful advice, but most importantly it is sensible and not patronising. The author treats her readers as intelligent beings and that makes a huge difference - to me at least.

The book is also full of real examples of family holidays that have gone well and not so well, which often make fascinating reading (it may seem obvious, but do keep an eye on your children when trekking across mountain ranges in Nepal!).

I particularly liked the way the book covers different specific areas of the world - both obvious holiday destinations and more unusual places - and tackles cultural differences, for example those countries where it is advisable to breastfeed in private, or cover even young children on the beach. What sort of loos to expect in Eastern Europe, what age you will need a car booster seat in various countries and where children can travel free on public transport etc etc etc. The list of practical, money and time saving tips is endless and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone planning to travel with their children - you may even enjoy yourself!

The Rough Guide to Egypt (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

The Rough Guide to Egypt (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
Customer Review: I like rough guides but take prices with a pinch of salt
Whenever I am going on holiday, one of the most exciting things for me is buying the rough guide before we go. On the rare occasion that I haven’t done this i’ve felt I’ve gone into things blind and not taken the best choices in terms of trips etc.

This rough guide did prove invaluable on our trip to Sharm el Sheik and a day trip to Cairo, however the one thing I would question, and I find this is generally the case with Rough Guides, is that the prices quoted for meals and, in this case especially, taxis is often way out. We travelled only a month after this book was published, so I would expect it to be much more up to date than it was.

The info on Sharm was pretty basic for our needs (it focuses a lot on diving, which we didn’t do), but when it came to Cairo we were able to plan an independent trip to the city, which as two lone women, we probably wouldn’t have done without the info in the book. The friend I was travelling with was on a pretty tight budget, and didn’t want to pay the ?150 each that it would cost to travel with the tour operator. With the help of the book, we managed to find return flights for ?45 each. However the taxis cost far more than anticipated. Aside from the ?10 each way to Sharm airport, the prices in the book were wildly innacurate. We used taxis in Cairo from the airport to the pyramids, then to the museum and back to the airport. The book claimed we would pay just a few pounds for these trips, but although we tried to haggle we found that no one would give us a ride for less than about a tenner each way. Also, the book says that you can go outside the airport to find cheaper fairs, however, it does not say that it is almost impossible to get out of the complex as a pedestrian without walking about 2 miles and getting run over!

The book was invaluable in stopping us getting ripped off by a man at the pyramids who pretended he was an official, and lead us away from the pyramids then told us we had to hire a camel/horse to get around the site -from reading the book I knew this wasn’t true, although this situation was pretty nasty and argumentative, and I’d say for this reason alone I would reccomend that unless you are really desperate to keep prices down, I would do this trip WITH the tour guide.

The day was redeemed however by a trip to the Cairo museum. The book was so detailed about the exibits, we didn’t really need a guide or a guide book, and I really enjoyed the whole experience.

Over all, I think rough guides are invalable in helping to plan what destinations to visit when you go on holiday, and give you a good feel for the place with their desciptions and insights into history & culture. However, I find that they sometimes give a rose-tinted view of the place - I’ve often found that places are not as safe for lone or female travellers as they would have you think, so do not blindly get yourself into a dangerous situation. Also, always allow for larger costs than the books would have you budget for. Always ask for advice from locals or other travellers, as you will probably find their experiences will give you a clearer picture of what to expect.

Customer Review: Best Guide Book Around
Having just returned from backpacking in Egypt, I found that this book was the best of the bunch of guides floating around, specifically the lonely planet, for the following reasons:

1) It is generally much more comprehensive and interesting

2) It is far more accurate and up to date. Somethimes the LP was plain wrong.

3) It is not afraid to tell you if something is boring, uinlike the LP, where everything is amazing

4)Everyone else has the LP, and ends up at exactly the same hotels etc.

Basically, get the Lonely Planet if you want a list of hotels and restaurants. If you actually want something interesting to read, get the Rough Guide

The Rough Guide to Venice and the Veneto (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

The Rough Guide to Venice and the Veneto (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
Customer Review: very useful indeed
I just came back from my first ever visit to Venice, to see the Biennale exhibition actually, but while in Venice…

Anyway, I bought this guide blindly on account of positive experiences with the Rough Guide to New York a few years ago and I must say I’m quite as pleased with this one! The maps in the back once again proved extremely useful and in this case they included a frequently consulted map for the vaporetti or bus boats that are such an essential feature of public transport around this city. (Sorry, I don’t much care for gondolas.)

Thanks to some pointers from Mr Buckley I have seen a massive amount of Tintoretto paintings, which was an unexpected delight, and shed a tear at the graves of Claudio Monteverdi and Igor Stravinsky. I guess visitors to Venice could do a lot worse than pick up this guide.

Barcelona Top 10 (Eyewitness Top Ten Travel Guides)
Customer Review: Barcelona!
I loved my stay at Barcelona, I tried to cramm in as much as I can in 3 days so I got 3 travel guides and this was one of them.

It contains 3 important maps: A map of Barcelona, a map of the gothic quarter, and a subway map. These maps are clear and well detailed.

By using the top 10 guides I managed to plan out all the must see places and the best places to eat - I definitely recommend the sagrada famiia. + there are top ten guides for each district so you can find out what is near you.

Out of the guides I have seen, this and the AA one are easily the best.

Customer Review: A useful guide to suit everyone
A guide that recommends the top 10 places to visit and stay, whether it be for culture, art, history, places to eat or entertainment. It is guaranteed to suggest some of the best places in the city and often the most hidden and without this guide you may never come across such nice places.

It has an easy to follow grid referencing system with clear maps at the front and back of the book.

I swear by these guides and will not visit a place without taking a Top 10 guide with me.

Ghosts of Spain: Travels Through a Country’s Hidden Past

Ghosts of Spain: Travels Through a Country’s Hidden Past
Customer Review: A bit disappointing….
I received this as a present from a friend who knows my love of Spain. I was delighted as I wanted to learn more about the Franco era, the reticence of Spanish to talk about the dictator and his legacy for the modern Spain.

However, I really struggled to read this book through to the end, parts of it were very well-written but I found the majority of it extremely ‘random’. The author jumped around too much for me and there was no real ‘flow’.

It’s one saving grace for me was the chapter on Flamenco which I thoroughly enjoyed. I would be reluctant to read anything by Mr Tremlett in the future, his style of writing is just not for me.

Customer Review: Changes several preconceptions about Spain and the Spanish
About 75,000 retired British people move permanently to Spain each year and there are roughly 300,000 already living in Spain, mainly on the costas. They’ve moved to obtain a better standard of living, to enjoy more sun and less stress, or to get away from ever-encroaching Big Brother government. A fair proportion of them have not bothered to learn anything about the history and culture of Spain and, sadly, the vast majority have failed to learn even the basics of the Spanish language. Whether you’re thinking of moving to Spain or simply want to spend a holiday there, this book is a fascinating introduction to the country’s “hidden past,” as the sub-title suggests.

Spaniards generally still believe it is their absolute right - even their obligation - to enjoy themselves. This may be the reason, researchers suggest, why Spaniards live longer than other Europeans. Of course their diet, heavy in fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and olive oil, helps too. Inevitably, there is a down-side as well: the Spanish are Europe’s biggest consumers of cocaine, alongside the British.

There is a dark side to Spain’s recent history. The atrocities committed by both the left and the right during, and most pertinently by Franco’s regime after, the Civil War of 1936-39 have to all intents and purposes been buried with all those thousands of bodies. Only now, over sixty years later are unmarked graves being exhumed and stories being told. Tremlett movingly follows this tragic journey of the good and the bad, the victims and the killers. Supporters of the communist cause were murdered and buried along countless roadsides. About 30,000 children of communist Spaniards were abducted and adopted. Even after the transition to democracy in 1975, it seems that a tacit agreement of silence was made about all this.

Civil wars are often worse than other types of conflict, as it’s brother against brother, neighbour against neighbour. At the war’s end, 500,000 Spaniards were dead, not to mention the Italians and Germans who fought for Franco and those Russians and other foreigners who volunteered for the International Brigades. Thousands went into exile. Then the post-war regime systematically rooted out sympathisers of the enemy and sent them to labour camps or executed them. Now, though, you’ll be hard put to it to find a statue of Franco; even the national anthem has been expunged of words - Francoist words; only now are they considering writing new words for the anthem.

To balance the endemic networking and nepotism of the Spanish system, they have other values, such as nobility, fairness, valour and justice. In Spain, the politically correct brigade is never going to reach the idiotic levels it has attained in the litigation-fearful UK. That’s because the Spanish are radically opposed to banning anything `that smacks of restriction or prohibition, as it’s considered immoral, old-fashioned and fascist.’ When you’ve lived through one dictatorship, you’re unlikely to welcome another.

Whenever possible, Spain has grasped change with eagerness. Their women won the vote in 1931, only three years after the UK and well ahead of France, Italy or Belgium. Granted, many of these freedoms were curtailed by Franco while he was in power. But now, for such an ostensibly male chauvinist country, women can be seen in all walks and all levels of life, including the Guardia Civil. It’s estimated that Spain has the highest plastic surgery rate in Europe, and one of the highest rates of organ donorship.

Eschewing the ma?ana stereotype, Spaniards actually have a can-do attitude. For example, the Madrid airport is the biggest infrastructure project in Europe, three times the size of Heathrow Terminal Five. The builders won the project for Terminal Five fifteen years ago and work still hasn’t started; the same builders won the Madrid airport project four years ago and it is half-completed already. Yes, much of Spain resembles a building-site - but at least they get on with it!

From new buildings to old. The British Isles is rich in history and castles and many British tourists are saddened and surprised at the dereliction of many fortifications in Spain. But bear in mind that Spain has about 8,000 castles and other fortifications and hundreds of monasteries and convents. It’s just impossible to allocate restoration funds to all of them.

Tremlett strives to learn what binds gypsies, jails and flamenco. He attempts to discover the attractions of legal brothels - night clubs. He travels throughout the Basque and Catalan lands in the hope of learning the reasons for their demands for separation from Spain, wondering why Galicia, who also has a strong case, is quite content to remain without autonomy.

The foregoing is a random selection from an interesting, humane and well-researched book by a British journalist who married a Spanish woman and has lived in Madrid for over a decade. Tremlett is clearly writing about a country he loves, a country and a people who amaze and mystify him. Spain’s history is still shaping him and his family and, indeed, all of those expats who have chosen to live there.

Cuba (Eyewitness Travel Guide)

Cuba (Eyewitness Travel Guide)
Customer Review: Comprehensive and Fascinating
This truly is a thorough and comprehensive travel guide, giving readers not only a great idea of what to expect when they visit Cuba, but also a great deal of other information regarding the scenery of Cuba, it’s social and political history, it’s key political figures, and a wealth of information on it’s art and culture.

All of which is rich and fascinating, creating a picture of an intriguing country of great warmth and openness; a country which is well worth visiting, if only for the pure white sand and the nature which is a veritable feast for poets and painters. This book will tell you pretty much everything you could possibly need to know about Cuba. Read it and read about an entirely different way of life.

Customer Review: BEST TRAVEL GUIDES IN THE WORLD!!!
We bought this guide at the airport on our way to Cuba. Having purchased Time-out & Berlitz guides and been underwhelmed by them, we were thrilled with the content of this guide. Not only do you get excellent pictures, the writing is really descriptive and very helpful to those tentative travellers who want to see a bit more of the country they are visiting. I imagine they would also be perfect for seasoned travellers and backpackers with sections dedicated to Havana and main province towns. It also gives invaluable tips that even our tour guides missed out, like the old man on the steps of Capitolio who takes black & white pictures of tourists for 2 Pesos. As it is small enough to be carried about with you in a bag or long pocket and also gives tips on good souveniers to bring back we think this is the perfect travelling companion to take to on your Cuban holiday. We will be purchasing more of the Eyewitness guides, whether we intend visiting the country/city or not as they make fantastic reading!!

The Rough Guide to Scottish Highlands and Islands (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

The Rough Guide to Scottish Highlands and Islands (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
Customer Review: Excellent guide book with honest and reliable information.
We purchased this book prior to our honeymoon visit for 2 weeks on the Isle of Skye , Sept 2001.
We have used the Rough Guides before on trips to the Greek Islands and appreciate the variety of information available. This book is useful for pre planning your trip to the Highlands & Islands but is also indispensable on a daily basis also.

It really opens up the wide variety of interesting places on Skye and the Highlands while giving you essential travel information and useful reviews on where to eat and places to visit. Once again the Rough Guide series has proved itself the most reliable and consistent guide book for the traveller, whether he be hiking or staying at he best hotels - there is something for everyone in the usual clear and concise manner. If your are looking for one book - buy this one !!

Customer Review: Must-have book for Scottish Island-hopping
This is a fantastic book which I’d thoroughly recommend to anyone taking a tour around the western highlands and islands of Scotland. Even though I’m from Aberdeen, I bought it for our honeymoon to Skye and Oban as even we Scots know little about the attractions of our own country and it’s the kind of book which is not just aimed at international tourists. It’s now the most dog-eared book I own, with many of the pages bringing back memories of our trip. Full of no-nonsense information on accommodation and restaurants, it is matter of fact and absolutely invaluable. It is uncompromising, with the authors being decidedly straight-talking in their reviews of places which they felt had little appeal. It enabled us to plan day trips to places of interest and navigate our way around the isles, making sure we missed nothing. Buy it before you go, use it to make travel arrangements and be sure to take it with you everywhere you go on your trip. Bargain buy, won’t date quickly, simple to use. Get it on your bookshelf now!

Romantic Cruise

Cruise Ships: A Romantic Getaway for Couples

With large workloads, hectic schedules, and children, many couples need a break from their daily routines.  This break often comes in the form of a romantic getaway.  If you and your partner are searching your next romantic adventure, you may want to examine the possibility of taking a cruise.

When it comes to romantic getaways, there are many who don’t even consider a cruise ship as an option.  However, there are others who literally live for cruises. These couples are likely to take two or more cruises each year.  Whether you’ve been on a cruise ship before or not, it is possible for you and your partner to have a romantic cruise ship getaway.

Before booking a cruise ship getaway, you are encouraged to consider a number of factors.  These factors are important when planning a romantic getaway aboard a cruise ship. There are a number of different cruises ships and cruises lines.  You may be unable to enjoy a romantic vacation if you are on a cruise ship that is overrun with children.

If you are interested in having an intimate, relaxing, and romantic cruise, you are encouraged to search for a cruise ship that has an age limit for its passengers. These cruise ships often restrict children from coming aboard.  Many times, cruise ships with a passenger age limit target their voyages specifically to couples looking for romance.

While it is possible to find a cruise ship with an age limit for their passengers, you may find it a bit difficult.  If you are unable to find one, inquire as to where couples with children will be placed.  A number of popular cruise ships work to keep families and individual couples separated.  If this policy is in place, a cruise line is likely to state the policy on their website.  The same information can be obtained by directly contacting a cruise ship representative.

The size of the cruise ship you are interested in vacationing on is also likely to determine the level of intimacy onboard.  If it is intimacy that you want, a smaller cruise ship may be your best bet.  Larger cruises ships have more passages and more passengers often make it difficult to have onboard, private moments.  A number of romantic cruise lines target their smaller cruise ships to couples looking to vacation alone.

In addition to the size of the ship, the ships style and décor may determine whether or not you can experience romance onboard.  As previously mentioned, there are a number of cruise lines that target couples looking to vacation alone.  Part of that targeting may include creating a romantic environment.  On romance themed cruise ships, you may find romantic cabins, room service, and other similar services.

Vacationing aboard a cruise ship is a great way for you and your partner to spend quality time together.  When selecting a cruise ship to vacation on, the intimacy off the ship is just as important as on the ship.  Almost all extended cruise ships dock in a port.  These ports are often located in another country, but not always.  To make the most out of your vacation destination, you will want to consider a cruise line that offers stops in romantic ports.  These ports may include, but are not limited to the Bahamas, Hawaii, or the Caribbean.

The Bahamas, Hawaii, and the Caribbean all have a number of cruise ship ports.  Additional ports can be found in the Untied States and overseas.  What many passengers enjoy about these particular ports is their climate.  The climate and the overall weather could have an impact on the romance aboard your ship.  Tropical weather tends to add to the romance in the air.

Cruises ships are often viewed as large, oversized vessels.  In addition to traditional cruise ships, it is possible for you to take a local cruise.  If you are looking for a romantic getaway, but you fear the cost of an expensive cruise, you are encouraged to look into local cruises offered near your home.  These cruises often involve dinner, dancing, and sometimes an overnight stay.  They most often occur on a large river or a lake.

Now that you know what to look for when booking reservations for a romantic getaway aboard a cruise ship, you can start making preparations.  With a small amount of time and research, you could be sailing the seas in luxury, with the one that you love.
