New York: Pocket Map and Guide (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
Customer Review: Buy it for the map….
Great map - useless guide. The guidebook does not give enough detail and you would be better off buying a guidebook that has more than 15 pages…. The map is great though and I used it loads when I went to New York in May.

Rome (Eyewitness Travel Guides)

Rome (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
Customer Review: A brilliant travel guide
I bought this book a few weeks before going on a 10 day holiday to rome and found it incredibly helpful. As well as giving lots of information on the more popular attractions such as st peters and the colosseum, there is an extensive amount of information on the lesser known, but equally as impressive sights.

As well as showing rome area by area, the Rome at a Glance section is brilliant as it gives a short list of the top attractions, then goes on to list the best churches, fountains, museums, etc.

Altogether a brilliant book to have with you whatever your doing and wherever you are in rome.

Customer Review: Not to the same standard as other Eyewitness guides
We bought this book a month before going to Rome for a long weekend. It is helpfully divided into sections represnting the various “burroughs” of Rome. What would have been really helpful is a Top 10 style list of what to see in the whole city. I guess you have to buy the separate Top 10 Rome book for that..

We read pretty much the whole book and it covered a lot of background information. I felt there was a lot missing about specific attractions, wrong or absent advice about when best to visit them (for example the Vatican Museum is an absolute MUST as part of the borader Vatican/St Peters visit, but has HUGE queues in the morning when all tour operators insist on taking you, none at all in the afternoon!). There’s a half-hearted section on hotels which is better removed or expanded to more than one or two hotels per category. Their system for ratings is a mystery (compared for example with TripAdvisor or Expedia)

If you’re going to spend a week or more in Rome, this books is probably more to your liking. You need to combine it with plenty of internet / hotel concierge research..

Paris (Eyewitness Travel Guides)

Paris (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
Dorling Kindersley’s Eyewitness city guides bill themselves as “the guides that show you what others only tell you”, and indeed, spectacular illustrations are one of their strongest points. Every page of an Eyewitness guide is filled with beautiful colour photographs, maps, drawings and diagrams that bring popular tourist destinations to life. Each guide colour-codes the city’s districts or neighbourhoods, making it easy for readers to know at a glance just where they are in the book–and where they want to go. Eyewitness Paris is typical of the series: a brief history of the city is followed by “Paris at a Glance” featuring the best museums, churches and parks; “Paris Through the Year”, a description of the seasons; and “A River View of Paris”, which takes the reader on a tour along the Seine. After this introductory section, Eyewitness Paris tackles the city of lights district by district, starting with ?le de la Cit? and ending with Montmartre. At the back of the book is a lengthy section called “Travellers’ Needs” which includes extensive information about restaurants, hotels, shopping, entertainment and special activities for children. The “Survival Guide” gives practical information about getting into and out of Paris, banking and postal services, safety, transportation and more. One of the best things about the Eyewitness series are the guided walks for each city. In Paris you have a choice of five 90-minute walks: around Parc Mon?eau, along the Canal St-Martin, around the ?le St-Louis, in Auteuil or in Montmartre–the directions for each are clear, the sites well-worth seeing and each provides you with the best possible way of getting to know the city. Don’t be deceived by Eyewitness Paris’s picture-heavy format–this little picture book packs a lot of information.

Customer Review: Excellent clear design with consistent approach throughout
When I worked in the library service, I grew to admire Dorling Kindersley’s Eyewitness books for the clarity of their design, so I had no hesitation in buying this Eyewitness guide to Paris. Each chapter represents an area of the city: the first page of the section gives a brief overview on the top half of the page, with a map on the lower half locating the major attractions. A double page spread follows with an aerial 3d illustration rather than a map, which is a nice touch because you can retrace some of your movements on your return and remember buildings and parks etc from the illustration. Photographs border the illustration pointing out features to look for. The next few pages then go into more detail on each individual attractions, sometimes with a further 3d illustration of major galleries or historical buildings. The consistency of this approach throughout each chapter allows you to browse through the book without feeling lost or overwhelmed with information - it also makes it easy to find something you half-remember as you can usually tell what part of the chapter it should be in. It also has 8 special guided walks and a detailed 18 page map with index at the back. I have found it excellent for planning trips, finding the information up to date and accurate. It is perhaps a little bit bulky and heavy to carry around, though I usually carried it in my back-pack. But it is very useful to have in your hotel room to refer to for information on interesting things you’ve seen or to plan your next day’s activity. All in all, highly recommended for it’s clear design, accuracy and consistent approach.

Customer Review: The maps make it good
Paris is a city I know fairly well, as my in laws lived there for years so I had many a free holiday. This book is a very accessable guide to the city, as it is designed around accurate, 3D drawn maps that act as the centre piece for information about an area. Really easy to see how things fit togehter. The approach extends to major sites and buildings, with well drawn exploded pictures giving an easy summary of what there is to be seen. Conveys information at a very intuitive level, and allows you to spot the next place to go with ease. Recommended.

The Rough Guide to Thailand (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

The Rough Guide to Thailand (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
Customer Review: Don’t bother with the ‘Lonely Planet ‘ guides
This is about the tenth Rough Guide I’ve used, and as usual it has been an excellent source of most importantly accurate information. All Rough Guides have evidently been well researched and give step-by-step procedures of what to do on arrival, finding accommodation and local transport etc. I’ve never understood why so many travellers use ‘Lonely Planet’ guides. The title may very well sound ethereal and full of the romatic allusion (illusion?) of travelling, but I have found them at best very mediochre. I can think their popularity lies more in the fact of their reputation. If you’re a ’serious’ traveller you only ever get the Lonely Planet. Well don’t bother, get a Rough Guide which you will almost certainly find more useful.

Customer Review: VERY GOOD INFO
I went to Thailand for the first time a week ago. I couldn’t use the book to its full due to the Tsunami. I was due to go to Krabi and Phi Phi but had to stay in the un-affected areas. The book was great for a starter but we didn’t realise it was the 2002 addition. It maybe that the book has been updated but it didn’t say how built up Chewang Beach Koh Samui would be. It sounded great but the book does not mention McDonalds, Starbucks, Boots, you name it every thing you have at home!
We found it very helpfull for Bangkok though and to generally get to know Thailand, its history and its culture!
I have had rough guide before and they are well worth it, just check the edition!

Rome Pocket Map and Guide (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
Customer Review: Pretty good little guide book
Have just returned from a 5 day trip in Rome, using this little guide as one of the books used whilst there. It was very helpful, although it’s quite tiny it was packed full of useful information, with good pictures, descriptions and advice. Although the maps only focus more on the centre of Rome they were adequate for our needs 4 days out of 5, as good as the map handed to us by our hotel.

Jupiter’s Travels

Jupiter’s Travels
Customer Review: Be a pillion passenger with Ted!
Brought this book on holiday to Bulgaria to pick up and read a few pages each day by the pool.Ended up reading the whole book in 2 days. Could not put it down. Just can’t wait to read follow up.

Customer Review: The Benchmark
Comparing this book with Ewan and Charley’s is unavoidable. McGregor and Boorman have had all the hype and the star treatment however so maybe it’s unfair. Did Ted have a support crew and 2 full sets of custom tools to fall back on? No he didn’t. Neither did he have enough cash to buy a new bike and new four wheel drive wagon when the going got tough. Ted did it on his own and with a bike from a factory unable to spring to his aid if needed. Ewan changed some spark plugs, Ted rebuilt his whole engine. If you want a book that started it and all tells you how to with the minimum of resources then this is for you. As Ewan and Charley point out, he’s the one who led and all the others follow.
