The Rough Guide to Thailand (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

The Rough Guide to Thailand (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
Customer Review: Although, I couldn’t go to everywhere in the book this left me thirsty for more!
Although I travelled just before a new edition of this book was published, I thought this book was excellent in helping me plan my holiday in advance. We knew we wanted to go to Thailand but weren’t quite sure where - this book helped us decide based on not only things to see & do but weather condtions etc, which I found were excellent compared to many internet sites and travel brochures (which portray Thailand as one climate area, when in fact it has many different weather systems). The book was excellent and still felt ‘up to date’; for example it helped us find the most fab little boutique hotel “Buddy Lodge” in Bankok which was exactly what we were looking for and never would have found otherwise. Also it had fantastic and accurate info on the Grand Palace, such as tours times and prices, not to mention a complete guide to the whole complex, building by building!

These books make such a fantastic read in terms of filling you in on culture and traditions - because I had read this before we travelled I spotted lots of things I would have missed otherwise. It seemed a shame that we only went on a two week tourist holiday - the book made me want to go back packing around the whole country!

Customer Review: Don’t bother with the ‘Lonely Planet ‘ guides
This is about the tenth Rough Guide I’ve used, and as usual it has been an excellent source of most importantly accurate information. All Rough Guides have evidently been well researched and give step-by-step procedures of what to do on arrival, finding accommodation and local transport etc. I’ve never understood why so many travellers use ‘Lonely Planet’ guides. The title may very well sound ethereal and full of the romatic allusion (illusion?) of travelling, but I have found them at best very mediochre. I can think their popularity lies more in the fact of their reputation. If you’re a ’serious’ traveller you only ever get the Lonely Planet. Well don’t bother, get a Rough Guide which you will almost certainly find more useful.

The Rough Guide to Travel with Babies and Young Children (Rough Guides Reference Titles)

The Rough Guide to Travel with Babies and Young Children (Rough Guides Reference Titles)
Customer Review: At last, practical, sensible advice
I must admit that I was sceptical when a friend recommended this book to me. I have often travelled with my three young children and I thought I knew it all. However I now admit I was wrong. This Rough Guide is full of useful advice, but most importantly it is sensible and not patronising. The author treats her readers as intelligent beings and that makes a huge difference - to me at least.

The book is also full of real examples of family holidays that have gone well and not so well, which often make fascinating reading (it may seem obvious, but do keep an eye on your children when trekking across mountain ranges in Nepal!).

I particularly liked the way the book covers different specific areas of the world - both obvious holiday destinations and more unusual places - and tackles cultural differences, for example those countries where it is advisable to breastfeed in private, or cover even young children on the beach. What sort of loos to expect in Eastern Europe, what age you will need a car booster seat in various countries and where children can travel free on public transport etc etc etc. The list of practical, money and time saving tips is endless and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone planning to travel with their children - you may even enjoy yourself!

The Rough Guide to Egypt (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

The Rough Guide to Egypt (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
Customer Review: I like rough guides but take prices with a pinch of salt
Whenever I am going on holiday, one of the most exciting things for me is buying the rough guide before we go. On the rare occasion that I haven’t done this i’ve felt I’ve gone into things blind and not taken the best choices in terms of trips etc.

This rough guide did prove invaluable on our trip to Sharm el Sheik and a day trip to Cairo, however the one thing I would question, and I find this is generally the case with Rough Guides, is that the prices quoted for meals and, in this case especially, taxis is often way out. We travelled only a month after this book was published, so I would expect it to be much more up to date than it was.

The info on Sharm was pretty basic for our needs (it focuses a lot on diving, which we didn’t do), but when it came to Cairo we were able to plan an independent trip to the city, which as two lone women, we probably wouldn’t have done without the info in the book. The friend I was travelling with was on a pretty tight budget, and didn’t want to pay the ?150 each that it would cost to travel with the tour operator. With the help of the book, we managed to find return flights for ?45 each. However the taxis cost far more than anticipated. Aside from the ?10 each way to Sharm airport, the prices in the book were wildly innacurate. We used taxis in Cairo from the airport to the pyramids, then to the museum and back to the airport. The book claimed we would pay just a few pounds for these trips, but although we tried to haggle we found that no one would give us a ride for less than about a tenner each way. Also, the book says that you can go outside the airport to find cheaper fairs, however, it does not say that it is almost impossible to get out of the complex as a pedestrian without walking about 2 miles and getting run over!

The book was invaluable in stopping us getting ripped off by a man at the pyramids who pretended he was an official, and lead us away from the pyramids then told us we had to hire a camel/horse to get around the site -from reading the book I knew this wasn’t true, although this situation was pretty nasty and argumentative, and I’d say for this reason alone I would reccomend that unless you are really desperate to keep prices down, I would do this trip WITH the tour guide.

The day was redeemed however by a trip to the Cairo museum. The book was so detailed about the exibits, we didn’t really need a guide or a guide book, and I really enjoyed the whole experience.

Over all, I think rough guides are invalable in helping to plan what destinations to visit when you go on holiday, and give you a good feel for the place with their desciptions and insights into history & culture. However, I find that they sometimes give a rose-tinted view of the place - I’ve often found that places are not as safe for lone or female travellers as they would have you think, so do not blindly get yourself into a dangerous situation. Also, always allow for larger costs than the books would have you budget for. Always ask for advice from locals or other travellers, as you will probably find their experiences will give you a clearer picture of what to expect.

Customer Review: Best Guide Book Around
Having just returned from backpacking in Egypt, I found that this book was the best of the bunch of guides floating around, specifically the lonely planet, for the following reasons:

1) It is generally much more comprehensive and interesting

2) It is far more accurate and up to date. Somethimes the LP was plain wrong.

3) It is not afraid to tell you if something is boring, uinlike the LP, where everything is amazing

4)Everyone else has the LP, and ends up at exactly the same hotels etc.

Basically, get the Lonely Planet if you want a list of hotels and restaurants. If you actually want something interesting to read, get the Rough Guide

The Rough Guide to Venice and the Veneto (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

The Rough Guide to Venice and the Veneto (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
Customer Review: very useful indeed
I just came back from my first ever visit to Venice, to see the Biennale exhibition actually, but while in Venice…

Anyway, I bought this guide blindly on account of positive experiences with the Rough Guide to New York a few years ago and I must say I’m quite as pleased with this one! The maps in the back once again proved extremely useful and in this case they included a frequently consulted map for the vaporetti or bus boats that are such an essential feature of public transport around this city. (Sorry, I don’t much care for gondolas.)

Thanks to some pointers from Mr Buckley I have seen a massive amount of Tintoretto paintings, which was an unexpected delight, and shed a tear at the graves of Claudio Monteverdi and Igor Stravinsky. I guess visitors to Venice could do a lot worse than pick up this guide.

Touring on a Budget

Touring on a Budget Can be Fun Filled
By Clinton N. Maxwell

A lot of people will get caught up in their lives and then will do things like take their family on vacation to a theme park, but you will find that there are a lot of adventures to discover in the world. You will want to consider that there is a general excitement about the traditional family trips, but you will also find that an oversea adventure may just be what the family needs right now. For those who would like to see some exotic places, you may want to go to Costa Rica and even places like Vietnam. You will also find that there are a lot of camping and hiking challenges throughout Europe and Asia so that you can get the perfect family vacation. You may even come back from your trip with the desire to go back year after year, but keep in mind that there are many aspects of the world that you will need to discover in order to bring back something new of interest.

For those who are unsure of a destination, you will want to consider the type of trip that you would like to have for your family. If it is the “Outback” adventure that you are looking for, Australia is the best place for your family to go. Keep in mind that there are tons of things that a family can do in Australia, but you will also want to find about other places in Europe and Asia. You will want to discover an adventure on the icy coast of Russia. You will want to go hiking through China, and you may even want to go to Germany for rock climbing. Your destination will depend on what it is that you desire to experience, but keep in mind that there is a lot of history to discover in these countries and you will want to consider going to a place with a very different culture.

As for your hotel and accommodations, you will find that there are thousands of four and five star hotels to choose from in all the countries of interest. You will also want to consider some of the things like camping and RV accommodations so that you can get use to being in the middle of nature. You will want to go online and work with a travel agent so that you can get transportation, guides, and even some of your rental equipment in one package. You will also want to keep in mind that it will take thousands of dollars to have a good vacation, but there are many specials that you will find when you take adventure into consideration.

If you don’t want to take the family to the beach for a week, then you need to come up with a destination that is filled with adventure. You will find that there is an family adventure that can fit into any budget.

Barcelona Top 10 (Eyewitness Top Ten Travel Guides)

Barcelona Top 10 (Eyewitness Top Ten Travel Guides)
Customer Review: Barcelona!
I loved my stay at Barcelona, I tried to cramm in as much as I can in 3 days so I got 3 travel guides and this was one of them.

It contains 3 important maps: A map of Barcelona, a map of the gothic quarter, and a subway map. These maps are clear and well detailed.

By using the top 10 guides I managed to plan out all the must see places and the best places to eat - I definitely recommend the sagrada famiia. + there are top ten guides for each district so you can find out what is near you.

Out of the guides I have seen, this and the AA one are easily the best.

Customer Review: A useful guide to suit everyone
A guide that recommends the top 10 places to visit and stay, whether it be for culture, art, history, places to eat or entertainment. It is guaranteed to suggest some of the best places in the city and often the most hidden and without this guide you may never come across such nice places.

It has an easy to follow grid referencing system with clear maps at the front and back of the book.

I swear by these guides and will not visit a place without taking a Top 10 guide with me.
